Is Your Heating System Ready for Fall? 7 Things Ocala Homeowners Should Check First

Aug 20, 2025 by ABS Heating & Air

Fall in Florida Means It’s Time to Prep Your Heat

Even though Ocala winters are mild compared to up north, the first chilly morning can still catch you off guard, especially if your heat won’t turn on. Many homeowners wait until the last minute to check their system, only to discover problems when it matters most. At ABS Heating & Air, we help Florida families avoid no-heat emergencies by making sure their systems are fall-ready.

Here are 7 things every homeowner should check before switching from cool to heat this season.

1. Change Your Air Filter

Your air filter is one of the most important components of your HVAC system, and one of the easiest to overlook. A clogged or dirty filter can block airflow, causing your system to overwork and reducing both comfort and efficiency. Over time, this extra strain can lead to system breakdowns or uneven heating. It can also worsen indoor air quality, aggravating allergies and respiratory issues. We recommend checking your filter monthly and replacing it at least every 1 to 3 months, especially before each heating or cooling season.

2. Test the Thermostat

Before temperatures drop, switch your system from “cool” to “heat” and increase the temperature a few degrees above the current room reading. Your system should kick on within a few minutes. If it doesn’t respond, you might be dealing with a faulty thermostat, bad wiring, or even a blown fuse. Testing early ensures you’re not left in the cold on that first brisk morning. If you’re using a smart thermostat, now is also a good time to review your heating schedule and energy-saving settings.

3. Check for Unusual Noises or Smells

When your heater first kicks on after months of sitting idle, pay close attention to what you hear and smell. A faint burning odor is usually normal; it’s just dust burning off internal components. However, persistent burning smells, musty odors, or anything metallic or chemical-scented could signal trouble. The same goes for noises. Rattling, banging, grinding, or squealing sounds may indicate loose parts, a worn blower motor, or other mechanical problems. Catching these issues early can prevent major repairs down the road.

4. Clear the Vents and Registers

Take a walk through your home and inspect each air supply and return vent. Make sure they’re open, unblocked by furniture or rugs, and free of dust or debris. Restricted airflow can throw off your system’s balance, causing hot and cold spots and reducing efficiency. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently clean vent covers. While you’re at it, double-check your return air grille to ensure it isn’t clogged or obstructed.

5. Inspect the Outdoor Unit (for Heat Pumps)

If your home uses a heat pump system, the outdoor unit works year-round. It cools in summer and heats in winter. Florida’s summer storms and falling leaves can clog the exterior coils or fan, affecting performance. Take a few minutes to clear any leaves, grass clippings, or dirt from around the unit. Trim nearby shrubs or vegetation to maintain at least two feet of clearance on all sides. If the unit appears tilted or has visible damage, schedule a service call to ensure it’s operating safely and efficiently.

6. Schedule a Professional Maintenance Visit

Even if everything looks and sounds fine, a seasonal tune-up is your best defense against mid-season breakdowns. At ABS Heating & Air, our fall HVAC maintenance includes a full inspection of your system. We check electrical connections, test controls and sensors, clean coils, lubricate moving parts, inspect ductwork, and ensure safe operation. This is also the best time to detect and address small issues before they become costly repairs. Regular maintenance not only protects your equipment but can also extend its lifespan and maintain its warranty.

7. Review Carbon Monoxide Safety

If you have a gas furnace or any fuel-burning appliance, carbon monoxide safety should be a top priority. Check that you have working carbon monoxide detectors installed in central locations and near bedrooms. Test each unit and replace batteries if needed. If your system is older or hasn’t been serviced in a while, we recommend scheduling a CO safety inspection. A cracked heat exchanger or incomplete combustion could allow dangerous gases into your home. Taking a few minutes to test your detectors now could save lives later.
